ASK ME ANYTHING

I am a passionately curious human who made the leap from Emergency Medicine to Management Consulting to Operations leadership in tech start ups. I fiercely believe in asking 'why' - challenging common wisdom to solve problems and develop people by thinking from first principles. After almost 4 years in San Francisco working for Thumbtack, i’ve recently returned to my hometown Melbourne where i’m loving the coffee and social policies.
I started my professional career as an Emergency doctor where I learned the art of hypothesis driven problem solving and triage. An MBA at Melbourne Business School gave me the skills and confidence to transition from medicine to business. I then spent 2 years as a consultant at Bain & Company, building my business toolkit, working on problems from call center performance to effective decision making for large teams. I fell in love with start up life as GM Operations at Scoopon, where I learned to scale an online business growing at an immense pace.
I moved to San Francisco in early 2013 to be at the heart of tech innovation in Silicon Valley. I joined Thumbtack - the easiest and most dependable way to find professionals to complete your projects - as their 25th employee just before Sequoia's Series B funding was announced. As Director of Customer Operations I was tasked with building and scaling Customer Service and Operations during a period of massive company growth (10x revenue and 15x team growth in 3 years!). Thumbtack is now a $1.3 billion business with 500 employees. In my third year at Thumbtack, I became VP People, bringing an operations mindset to scaling Recruiting, HR, Learning & Development and Office Operations. I loved challenging traditional approaches to People Operations, to find and motivate talented team members to do their best work at Thumbtack.
I’m just settling in to Melbourne with my partner, 2 kids and a new dog, and looking forward to this next great life adventure!
Jodie Auster is a rare leader who has seen first-hand what vertical Silicon-Valley growth looks like. Jodie has just moved back to Melbourne after helping scale Thumbtack to a $1.3 billion business with 500 employees as its VP of People.Jodie started her professional career as an Emergency doctor, went on to do an MBA at Melbourne Business School, spent 2 years as a consultant at Bain & Company, and then became GM Operations at Scoopon. We are lucky to have Jodie in Australia and excited to see who she helps to grow and scale next!
